Prelim Film Evaluation

Preliminary Evaluation

At the start of the course we had to make a preliminary film including a:
  • A character opening a door and entering the location
  • A character walking across the room
  • Two characters sitting on a chair opposite each other
  • Two characters having a small dialogue between the two of them
We was given a prop we had to include in our film and a location. My group and I got a doctors waiting room as a location and a bunch of flowers as an object. With these two we had to create a short opening clip introducing a story including 3 different types of shot in our film:
  • Match Cut
  • Shot/reverse shot
  • 180-degree rule
Skills Developed
How I felt whilst making the prelim film
During the different stages of the project, planning, filming and editing i continuously developed new skills learning new different ways to make our film to the best of our ability. In the planning stage we created a storyboard of our narrative so we know what we was doing and also included the types of shots we were going use to give us a general understanding of how the film was going to look like. As we started editing I realised if we used a tripod we could get better angles and the camera would be much more steady, this made our film much more effective and helped when filming. We made sure to use different types of shots including a match cut and sticking to the 180-degree rule. The skill i developed whilst filming was perfecting the 180-degree rule as the more i filmed the more understanding of its importance i had and could soon spot when their was a mistake or how to make the shot look much more effective. Personally i found the editing of the film much harder and difficult then filming as we had to decide which parts we was going to include or cut but slowly as i worked on the software more i become better at editing.

What went well & Improvements
Overall, our film was a success. We included all the different shots we had to use and our match cuts flowed throughout the film. Our whole group contributed in making the film as we all worked together, splitting up our roles and taking turns in editing and filming. However, if i had to make any improvements i would manage our time better so that we didn't have to rush our filming and our editing. This would then allow us to have enough time to include sound effects and music in our film to make it much more effective and allow us to work on our editing skills even further.
