How can a film opening attract an audience?

ESTABLISH SHOT

FIRST impressions are crucial. To be able to catch the audience attention and attract them to watch the film, you have to include factors that will grab and shock your audience to keep them engaged.

Establish shot is the first shot in the film which the audience sees the characters or the setting. This must immediately draw the audiences attention  into the film.

Many producers believe that the establishing shot is one of the most important parts in the opening of the film as it is the first thing the audience sees. Therefore, a powerful establishing shot will usually lead to a powerful film.

Secondly, the mis en scene is the next important part to grabbing the audiences attention. The mis en scene includes the sound, props, location and scenery. All of these things can help intrigue the audience. For example; By using great sound effects which compliment the film it will make it much more enjoyable and realistic.

Now can we have a round of applause for the genus who came up with sound effects......

According to Thomas Sutcliffe, a British Journalist and arts broadcaster; "Films need to seduce their audience into a long term commitment"

My interpretation to what Thomas Sutcliffe means is that within the first few seconds of the opening, directors and producers need to show the audience the best start to film leaving them shocked and hungry for more.

A good film opening will let the audience have an insight to the film letting them know just enough to leave them intrigued to find out more. Although, you shouldn't give away to much at the start you also have to find a right balance so that your audience is engaged with the film.
