Genre is a style, class or type that categories films, art, music or literature. Genre is the subject of a film, it is the type of theme a film is based on. Genre is a way to distinguish between types of films. For example genre allows us to see the difference between a horror film and a chick flick. Obvious factors make it clear to the audience what type a genre a film is. This is called codes and conventions - elements that are typical in a genre. An example of this would be two characters falling in love in a film of a romance genre.

SUB GENRE - The defining of a genre more specifically e.g. "This film features murder and blood but also two character falling immensely for each other. This film is a horror/romance."

HYBRID GENRE - Genre that blends themes and elements together e.g. action comedy.

GENRE TROPES - Cliches. E.g. In a thriller film we can expect victims, blood, murders, deaths and tension.

This still from the Teen Drama / Chick Flick film Mean Girls makes its genre very clear throughout the whole film. The mise en scene is a clear give away of the genre as it features four girls walking through a mall. It is clear that this a teen drama as the mall is usually stereotyped as a place where most young people prefer to spend their time. The malls is also stereotyped for where woman spend "all" their time, as society believes that shopping is very feminine. The use of of the colour pink also depicts the film as a chick flick as once again this is a colour assumed that all females favour. The teen aspect of is introduced by the young girls and their outfits choices, which would be considered girly and young. Teen Dramas and Chick Flick often feature a lot of codes and conventions.

This still from the romance film, Dirty Dancing immediately gives of the vibe of love, adoration and intimacy. As the male gazes down at the female it is clear to the audience that he is completely in awe and in love. The females facial expression deems the same feeling of love and affection - this being very typical in romance films.

This still from the Sci Fi film The Guardians of the Galaxy, creates the idea of war in a fantasy universe or space. The fantasy aspect is caused by the strange creatures such as the fox holding a gun and the walking tree. And the war aspect is caused by the tense body language of the characters, they seem alert and ready for any type of unexpected action that may come fourth. The mise en scene is a clear image of the inside of some kind of space contraption, once again adding to the theme of space/galaxy.
