FeedBack - Rahma Abudlle Alasow

FeedBack Changes

After we got our feedback we made a few changes...

1.

Our Title:

2.

Our Locations:

Another problem we realised is that we had to change a few of our locations as it was based in places which we would have to get permission to film in e.g shopping malls, train station. This could cause many problems so we decided to use the more public places such as the canal and open spaces so that we have more freedom and wouldn't be breaking any rules.

Character Social Profile

Alessandra wants revenge. She wants her sister to feel the same pain she has been enduring for years, trapped inside a small room with white walls and being forced to swallow colourful pills daily. Alessandra, despite her mental issues, is an intelligent woman. She plans to get to her sister through social media - Facebook. She deceives her sister by making a fake Facebook profile, under the name Alex Smith and begins pursuing her. Compliments, conversations and questions. Alessandra slowly begins to learn about aspects of her sister's life, from where she works to where she spends her time on weekends. Slowly, but surely, Alessandra's conniving plan begins to unfold.

We have decided to create actual Facebook pages for our characters as this makes our film more realistic. Many scenarios such as people being stalked on their social media accounts occur in real life, which is what our film is based on with a twist. By adding the realistic aspect of creating actual social media accounts, it makes the film seem more believable and therefor heightens the audience's experience. Also creating a more serious / frightening tone, as it is possible that such elements in our film to happen in real life. We have chosen to use the Facebook over other other social media websites, as Facebook is very well known with 1.79 million monthly users. It is very unlikely that audience members will not understand what Millicent and Alessandra are using to interact with each other.

We've chosen and evaluated  many locations and settings for our title sequence some including, Angel, Kings Cross, Regents Canal, Lift, Shoredict, Central London, Westfields, Bedroom and a Bus. We've chosen these location as there common and we wanted the audiences to follow through with the main character in the day to day life.
We,ve chosen busy places like Westfields and Central London as its easier for someone to be stalked without being noticed

PITCH-Louanne Adams

The main chosen genre of our film is thriller with a sub-genre of psychological and crime thriller,  as we feel like this is a suitable genre as it appeals to a wider crowd of people, as research shows men are more attracted to crime thrillers and females psychological. Also as there realistic and based on real life scenarios , which makes it easy to remake.

TITLES OVER MOVING IMAGES:
A title sequence that we was inspired by was Psycho,we thought the title sequence for Psycho was effective and it reflected the genre and activities in the film by using simply moving imagery representing slashes. Also the way the titles appear jaggeder on screen, reflects the genre again as its shows a character with psychological issues.

TITLES USING ANIMATION OR MOTION:
We've also chosen Seven as it a thrilling title sequence. This title sequence inspired us because of the build up of suspense, which has the audience constantly imagine and thinking whats going to happen in the film, which builds up tension. We like the idea of close-ups of symbolic objects, and not revealing the main characters identity.

Type of Title Sequence - Rahma Abdulle Alasow

4 TYPES OF TITLE SEQUENCES:

  • Discrete
  • Stylised
  • Narrative
  • Animated

We`re going to have a mixture of discrete and stylised title sequences embed into our opening so that it fits in and flows. We`re also going to have a few credits on a blank screen for effect for example when the music and sound goes off and it goes silent a black screen with a title sequence will appear. This would happen towards the end off the title sequence to engage the audience and draw them in. We aren't going to stick to the typical title sequences and conform to just one type. Throughout we`re going to be mixing them up and challenging the conventions, this is difficult and a risky move which could come out really good or a disaster.

Examples of the title sequences that influenced me

Discrete
Discrete title sequences are separately filmed clips that are played before the movie. Usually they're to set the mood and tone for the rest of the film. An example of this is Skyfall watch below. The opening isn't incorporated with the actually film but the sound, mis en scene and cinematography sets the atmosphere and mood of the film. Even with separate clips the audience is able to get an insight of the film immediately and can infer the action conventions from the use of the props of guns, bombs, blood and much more. It actually foreshadows the whole film and without the audience knowing they're shown the story and what happens in the film briefly in the tile sequence. This is the exact same effect i want our title sequence to have.

Stylised
Stylised title sequences relies mostly on editing to create the opening. Its an eccentric way to introduce the credits and characters to the audience which really captures their attention and intriguers. It isn't dull nor tedious and is an effective way to incorporate the credits without it being to oblivious. The editing forms part of the title sequence and from the way the credits are placed and the fonts that are used it enables the audience to determine the mood and genre of the film. For example the stylised title sequence North by Northwest shown below uses a lot of editing to embed the credits in a creative way. As the font of the credits have sharp edges and are constantly moving we can assume that the film has an element of danger and action.

Blank screen
Credits on a blank screen is a very simple, subtle title sequence. But, when used efficiently and creatively it can become very effective. It consists of a blank screen with a contrast colour writing showing the credits. It allows the audience to make their own interpretations and own judgment of the film. It creates a sense of mystery which is used frequently in the thriller genre and excites the audience that they have to solve everything themselves. The way we would use a blank screen is towards the end of the title sequence when everything stops and becomes silence a blank screen would come showing the credit.

Inspirations

This student film uses a creative opening with a mixture of stylised and discrete title credits to in corporate it into the title sequence. This is very similar to how we want to start our title sequence and is a massive influence on our film.

BLOG POST 37 - Shannel Darko

SECONDARY IMAGES

PRIMARY IMAGES

We chose to use the streets of Camden and Shoreditch as they have many alley ways with walls filled with graffiti. We believe this is a great setting for a thriller as when it gets dark, the atmosphere around these areas are very eerie. This sets the tone for our film - the quietness of the sparsely area builds tension and suspense.

COSTUMES

Sound Design

Sound is a very important part of all films as it engages the audience and heightens their experience. I will use a range of diegetic sounds to build up tension and allow the title sequence to have a realistic feel to it, such as the sound of running feet and loud breathing. I will also use non diegetic sounds such as mysterious, slow music to set the mood and atmosphere, creating a tranquil yet nervous tone. By layering all this sounds up together it will compliment one another and create a dark mood.

Here are a few examples of sounds (non copyrights) that we would include in our title sequence:

1.

This slow dark instrumental music builds up tension and suspense as it gets faster and fits into our film well as it creates that dark moody atmosphere that were trying to.  The slow build up will compliment as the title sequence gets deeper and people find out more of the story.

2.

We would use this camera shutting sound effect as it would create a realistic tone, engaging the audience.

3.

Background noise is essential in a film, even though the audience may not even notice it but it necessary for some noise to be heard.  Especially if it is filmed in a busy location as it is never silent outside so without it would just look out of place.

4.

The low drone sound is very effective in the background layered on top of all the other sounds and music.

5.

As effective as sound may be, SILENCE and no sound is also very effective and can used.

This title sequence from Red lights is what gave me inspiration for our soundtrack for our title sequence. The music gradually builds up creating the exact eerie mood we want to create.

Target audiences for many thrillers are 18+ as they may include violence and some psychological issues for younger viewers, frequently when presenting a film there's warning before the films starts explaining its ratings and why its rated.
Example: contains extreme violence and sexual scenes

Psychological thrillers are popular with those age groups between 16-30, with a slight majority being female. In research it shows that females are more attracted to psychological thrillers because they enjoys the story behind the events that take place in the movie, the study also shows that females like the intellectual side of strange psychologically challenging behavior.

Things such as emotional and mental conflict and the lack of physical conflict attracts less male viewers..

The age rating that our title sequence would most likely fall into is 16 +due to how it covers some or more adult topics such as psychological issue.
Its also aimed at males and females who enjoys thrillers, the opening of our film will have a 16+ rating become the movie contains a character with psychological issues, however is not an 18+ because our film is not overly explicit.

An ident is a type of logo / image that represents a brand. It usually appears at the beginning of different types of media such a films, and lasts for about 30 seconds. An ident gives a brand character, it allows audiences to acknowledge the fact this piece of media was created by a certain brand.

An example of a popular ident is 20th Century Fox. This ident appears in films as well as television programmes such as Avatar and The Simpsons. This is an example of a moving ident. Whenever it appears at the beginning of films and programmes, the camera angle circles the golden monument in the centre, while a catchy tune of trumpets and other instruments are played. This quick intro is well known by many, often hummed along to whenever featured in a film. This is a great aspect about this ident as such a catchy tune makes the ident memorable and therefore also the brand itself. This thus creates brand establishment.

BLOG POST 32 - Institution by Shannel

Ident

I designed this Ident on After Effects which i found quite difficult at first as i had to do it alone. I chose this design specifically as it had a more feminine touch to it and especially since our genre targets majority to men i thought the Ident will attract the females and thus have a mixture of both genders. I choose the bursting effect so that from the start our film will be exciting to the audience building up their adrenaline. Also, the use of all the colours mixed together makes the Ident very eye catching and will catch the audiences attention immediately.

When making the Ident a lot of mistakes where made which i would go back and change if i could. Evidently, on the video clip above you can see that my logo is missing. This is because i never saved the logo with the ident together onto the safe space but just on my documents which i later lost. This had a huge effect on my Ident. This is a mistake we need to make sure not to make when filming later on as it could ruin out tile sequence.

This is the logo i made to fit into the middle of the bursting effect. As you could see its very feminine so that we could attract the females specifically. I kept the font simple and in a uni sex colour blue. The simplicity of the ident will intrigue the audience more to find out what the film is really about.
